Purposeful Breath

Are you holding your breath?  Shallow breathing is the body’s way of trying to protect. Holding in a strong emotion like fear, grief or anger can physically restrict breath. Muscles become constrained to prevent more pain. What our minds dwell on and the emotions we feel are not just thoughts, they are experienced somewhere in the body as well- often beginning with holding our breath. Taking time to stop, be still, and breathe – even just a few deep inhalations and exhalations, will give space to let go of what’s weighing us down.

Eight Benefits of Purposeful Breath

  • Improve cognitive health
  • Relieve stress
  • Lower levels of anxiety
  • Reduce hypertension
  • Aids in digestion
  • Reduce insomnia
  • Boosts the immune system
  • Increases mindfulness

One way to give yourself a quick RESET, is to stop and breathe! Simply stopping and taking 5-6 rounds of deep belly breath can immediately reduce stress, bring mindfulness and encourage release. It is a very physical activity that benefits our spirit as well. Take some time to notice your breath today- where are you tight, holding on, or resisting? Find a moment to be still and practice purposeful breath. Your body and your mind will thank you!
